An elderly Kenyan woman escaped being burned alive by relatives after a local councillor turned up just in time and took her to a refuge. The Daily Mail (UK) reports that Sadaka Muruu, who is 100, was accused by relatives of practising witchcraft.
She was dragged from her home naked and neighbours told she was a witch. Had Councillor Teddy Mwambire not shown up, she could have been hacked or burned to death, a fate many accused ”witches” have suffered with over 50 so far in 2012 being reported.
Elderly people are often accused of witchcraft and then murdered by relatives in Kenya. Often, the allegations are a front to gain title to land held under their name. In the case of Sadaka Muruu, she owned 12 acres of land fronting onto the Indian ocean.
